We called this trip to southern CA the rain vacation. We kept getting rained out. It rained so bad in San Diego we started worrying about mud slides and that’s how we ended up at El Centro. A little luck was also involved getting into El Centro for there is seldom any vacancies at NAF El Centro in the winter months, especially December.
We called the NAF from San Diego and were told there were a couple of cancellations because of - guess what? - the rain. When we got there we found that the overflow sites were in a parking lot with a ball field behind the sites. The sites were FHU with 30 amps but the power posts had an extra 15 amp power supply that came in handy for our hot plates and such. There were advantages to our sites. They were right across the street from the chow hall, bowling ally and golf driving range. We ate at the chow hall a lot. In the winter months before the Blues get there the RV Park population out numbers the base population and we were welcome everywhere.
NAF El Centro is the winter home of the Blue Angle flight demonstration team. About 10 days after our arrival they got there. So much for the quietness. They operated from dusk to dawn just about every day. Sometimes right over the field. I’ll add a picture of their flight line.
We only stayed a month. Yep, rained out again and in the desert. It rained so bad they had to rent large tanker trucks with vacuum equipment to get the water out of the streets and parking lots. We moved to Yuma.
